Background | Fentanyl was first synthesized in the late 1950s and first introduced into medical practice during the 1960s as an intravenous anaesthetic. Other analogues of fentanyl have since been synthesized and are extensively used in anaesthesia and analgesia for effective relief of chronic pain. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid and as an analgesic has approximately 80 times the potency of morphine. In high doses Fentanyl has been known to cause euphoria, muscular rigidity, sedation and respiratory depression. The effects of fentanyl are very similar to those produced by heroin however fentanyl is much more potent. As such the use of fentanyl is often abused. The short lasting effect of fentanyl means users can become dependent quickly. |
