UBC-13 is a ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme which plays a role in the control of progress through the cell cycle and differentiation. It also plays a role in the error-free DNA repair pathway and contributes to the survival of cells after DNA damage. UBC-13 acts together with the E3 ligases, HLTF and SHPRH, in the 'Lys-63'-linked poly-ubiquitination of PCNA upon genotoxic stress, which is required for DNA repair (1). In addition, UBC-13 is responsible for noncanonical ubiquitination of TNF receptor-associated factor (TRAF)-family adapter proteins involved in Toll-like receptor and TNF-family cytokine receptor signaling, which are regulators of innate immunity (2).
