C-Jun N-terminal kinase 1 (JNK1) is a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family (1). It is activated by environmental stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines by phosphorylating a number of transcription factors, such as AP-1, and thus regulates AP-1 transcriptional activity (2). JNK1 regulates microtubule assembly in neuronal cells and microtubule-associated proteins (MAP) activity, maintaining the cytoskeletal integrity of neurons (1). In T-cells, JNK1 and its JNK2 are required for polarized differentiation of T-helper cells into Th1 cells (2). JNK1 plays a role in obesity (3). A JNK1 deficiency results in reduced adiposity and improved insulin sensitivity (3).
