CD14 is a glycophosphatidylinositol-anchored protein expressed on the surfaces of monocytes and plymorphonuclear leukocytes. It acts as a co-receptor for the detection of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (1). CD14 cooperates with MD-2 and TLR4 to mediate the innate immune response to bacterial LPS. It acts via MyD88, TIRAP and TRAF6, leading to NF-kappa-B activation, cytokine secretion and the inflammatory response (2). CD14 is expressed strongly on peripheral blood monocytes and macrophages, and weakly on the surface of granulocytes (1).
