|Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) is a stromal factor which forms complexes with various members of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and irreversibly inactivates them. A multifunctional glycoprotein, TIMP-1 is one of the four members of TIMP family (TIMP 1-4) which exhibits 50% sequence similarity and expressed in wide variety of cells (1). TIMP-1 binds non-covalently in a 1:1 stoichiometric fashion to the active form of MMPs thereby inhibiting the proteolytic activity of these enzymes. In addition to inhibitory function, other studies have proposed growth protion, anti-apoptotic, anti- and pro-angiogenic functions for TIMP-1. TIMP-1 expression has been observed in poor clinical outcome in many cancer types, making it ideal prognostic marker in various cancer (2).|
