|Homo sapiens vimentin (VIM)|
|Vimentin is the most common member of the intermediate filament (IF) family and one of the main components in the cytoskeleton structure. It is expressed during cell development and differentiation in a variety of mesenchymally and mesodermally derived cells (1). Vimentin is essential in cell integrity and cytoskeletal stability. The reorganization of vimentin, similar to all IF proteins, occurs during different stages of the cell cycle and cell signaling by a site-specific phosphorylation (serine and threonine residues) (2). Vimentin interacts with other proteins such as uridine phosphorylase and desmoplakin (3, 4). It is highly expressed in fibroblasts and many hormone-independent mammary carcinoma cell lines (5).|
