Function	SMG5 is an essential factor in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay, a conserved pathway that degrades mRNAs with premature translation termination codons. Phosphorylated UPF1 is directly recognized by SMG5, SMG6 and SMG7 via a conserved 14-3-3 like domain present in all three proteins. These proteins are thought to serve as adaptors between phosphorylated UPF1 and protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), thereby triggering UPF1 dephosphorylation (1).
