Members of the protein kinase C (PKC) family of serine/threonine kinases play a key role in regulating the differentiation and growth of diverse cell types. PKC gamma is activated by various secondary messengers such as calcium, diacylglycerol, phosphatidylserine, and phorbol ester. After activation by phorbol, it moves to the cytoplasm and regulates intracellular communication in epithelial cells. PKC gamma expression is specific to neurons in the brain and spinal cord, playing an important role in neurogenerative signal transduction (1). It is required for neuronal processes such as long term potentiation (LTP) and long term depression (LTD). PKC has three phosphorylation sites in its kinase domain, which are critical for full activation of PKC in response to various stimulants (2). Mutations in the PKC gamma gene have been linked to the neurodegenerative disorder spinocerebellar ataxia-14 (SCA14) (3).
