|PDZ domain-containing protein 1 (PDZK1) is a scaffold protein that connects plasma membrane proteins and regulatory components, regulating their surface expression in epithelial cells (1). PDZK1 is suggested to play multiple roles in normal physiology and may influence associated disorders. It is involved in maintaining hepatic SR-BI levels and controlling HDL metabolism, protects against the development of atherosclerosis and also mediates SR-BI-dependent regulation of endothelial cell biology by HDL (2). PDZK1 expression is limited to epithelial cells, located in the kidney, pancreas, liver, and small intestine. It is also expressed at a lower level in the adrenal cortex, testis and stomach, and it is over-expressed in breast, renal and lung carcinomas (1). |
