FunctionNR2E1 is an orphan receptor that binds DNA as a monomer to hormone response elements (HRE) containing an extended core motif half-site sequence 5'-AAGGTCA-3' in which the 5' flanking nucleotides participate in determining receptor specificity. NR2E1 is required for brain development, and it is also involved in the regulation of retinal development (1). It is also an essential regulator of neural stem cell self-renewal, maintaining adult neural stem cells in an undifferentiated and self-renewable state (2).
