FunctionMaternal embryonic leucine zipper kinase (MELK), a member of the CAMK Serine/Threonine protein kinase family, functions to regulate the cell cycle (1). It serves as a marker for self-renewing multipotent neural progenitors (MNP) (1). MELK interacts in a phosphorylation-dependent manner with the transcription and splicing factor NIPP1, and this interaction can inhibit spliceosome assembly during mitosis (2). An additional substrate of MELK is the zinc finger-like protein ZPR9, which binds tightly to MELK and causes its nuclear accumulation (3). It is also expressed in tissues such as the placenta, kidney, and thymus (4).
