Background Myocyte-specific enhancer factor 2C (MEF2C) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MEF2C gene. MEF2C is a transcription factor in the MEF2 family, which binds specifically to the MEF2 element present in the regulatory regions of many muscle-specific genes. It is known to be localized in the nucleus and cytoplasm and is reported to be expressed in the brain and skeletal muscle. MEF2C is involved in cardiac morphogenesis, myogenesis and vascular development, neurogenesis and in the development of cortical architecture. The MEF2C has been associated with neurodevelopmental disorder with hypotonia, stereotypic hand movements, and impaired language. MEF2C is also involved in the development of various neuropsychiatric disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD), epilepsy, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In addition, increasing evidences indicate that MEF2C acts as tumor-promoting or -suppressing proteins dependent on the type of cancer. High MEF2C expression has been linked to mixed lineage leukemia-rearranged acute myeloid leukemia as well as to the immature subgroup of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
