Background Interleukin-17A is a protein that in humans is encoded by the IL17A gene. In rodents, IL17A used to be referred to as CTLA8. It is a proinflammatory cytokine produced by activated T cells. This cytokine can stimulate the expression of IL-6 and cyclooxygenase-2 (PTGS2/COX-2), as well as enhance the production of nitric oxide (NO). IL17A has been shown to be mostly beneficial against infection caused by extracellular bacteria and fungi. In addition, IL17A has been shown to recruit myeloid derived suppressor cells to dampen anti-tumor immunity, and enhance tumor growth in vivo through the induction of IL-6. IL17A seemed to facilitate development of colorectal carcinoma by fostering angiogenesis via promote VEGF production from cancer cells. High levels of IL17A are associated with several chronic inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriasis, Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and multiple sclerosis. The presence of IL17A has also been proven in a number of ocular diseases associated with neovascularization. Elevated concentrations of IL17A have been shown in vitreous fluid during proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and higher concentrations of IL17A have been observed in patients with age-related macular degeneration.
