USP39 (U4/U6.U5 tri-snRNP-associated protein 2) is involved in the assembly of the spliceosome, the RNA splicing machinery. The spliceosome consists of five small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), U1, U2, U4, U5 and U6 as well as a large number of non-snRNP proteins. It is essential for the recruitment of tri-snRNP to the pre-spliceosome and is known as a tri-snRNP-specific protein. USP39 is also a deubiquitinating enzyme, but it lacks protease activity due to absence of key active-site residues cysteine and histidine (1).
