|ULK1 is a serine/threonine kinase that promotes autophagy signaling (1). It forms a complex with mammalian Atg13 (mAtg13) and FIP200. In this complex, mAtg13 mediates the interaction between FIP200 and ULK1 and is required for the phosphorylation of FIP200 by ULK1 in response to nutrient starvation. mTORC1 associates with the ULK1-mAtg13-FIP200 complex through an interaction between raptor and ULK1, phosphorylating ULK1 and mAtg13 to repress the kinase activity of ULK1, thereby suppressing the initiation of autophagy (2). Moreover, ULK1 is involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter trafficking and axonal growth (3).|
