TCTP (translationally-controlled tumor protein) has a potent anti-apoptotic function. Calcium up-regulates TCTP transcription, suggesting a role for TCTP in intracellular calcium homoeostasis (1). It is apparently a histamine-releasing factor identified from a protein-inducing secretion of histamine from basophiles, with an extensive homology to TPT1 (2). TCTP is also a tubulin-binding protein that associates with microtubules in a cell-cycle dependent fashion (3). Furthermore, it is suggested to regulate cellular pluripotency (4).
