ZPR1 is a zinc finger protein that acts as a signaling factor relaying proliferative growth signals from the cell surface to the nucleus. It binds to eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1alpha (eEF1 alpha) in response to growth stimuli, and is also involved in transcription and cell cycle regulation. ZPR1 interacts with survival motor neurons (SMN) proteins, co-localizing in small subnuclear structures (1). Moreover, ZPR1 is part of the cytoplasmic preimport snRNP complex formed by SMN, Sm proteins, snurportin 1, and importin beta (2).
