TCF-1/TCF-7 is a transcriptional activator involved in T-cell lymphocyte differentiation, and it is necessary for the survival of CD4+ CD8+ immature thymocytes. As a HMG box transcription factor family member, it binds to the T-lymphocyte-specific enhancer element (5'-WWCAAAG-3'). (1, 2). Expression of TCF-1/TCF-7 is limited to T cells and NK cells (2). It also acts directly downstream of the canonical Wnt–ß-catenin signaling pathway. Non-phosphorylated ß-catenin accumulates in the cytoplasm, translocates to the nucleus and together with TCF-1/TCF-7, induces expression of Wnt (3).
