p54nrb (NONO) is a DNA- and RNA-binding protein which plays various roles in the nucleus, including transcriptional regulation and RNA splicing (1). As part of the splicesomal complex, PTB-associated RNA splicing factor (PSF) and p54nrb are essential for both step I and II pre-mRNA splicing reactions (2). p54nrb is a component of the SFPQ-NONO complex, which is associated with MATR3 and plays a role in nuclear retention of defective RNA’s. The complex is involved in DNA unwinding by modulating the function of topoisomerase I/TOP1 (3). A rearrangement between p54nrb and the transcription factor E3 has been observed in papillary renal cell carcinoma (1).
