|Transcription factor SP1 is a member of the Sp/XKLF (Specificity protein/Krüppel-like factor) family. It regulates transcription by dynamically recruiting and forming complexes with many factors associated with transcription. Although SP1 has been described as a transcriptional activator, it can also act as a repressor (1). SP1 has been implicated in the expression of numerous genes involved in many aspects of cellular life such as metabolism, cell growth, differentiation, angiogenesis and apoptosis regulation (1). Although it is a ubiquitous protein that targets both core promoters and enhancers, SP1 is also highly expressed in various cancers of the stomach, colon and rectum, pancreas, breast, and thyroid (2).|
