BackgroundFrataxin is a mitochondrial protein that belongs to the FRATAXIN family. It functions in regulating mitochondrial iron transport and respiration (1). Frataxin is crucial for iron–sulfur cluster (ISC) biosynthesis and plays a primary role in their protein maturation in human cells (2). A reduced level of functional protein results in Friedreich ataxia (1, 2).
