Integrin beta-3 (CD61 antigen, GP IIIa) is a member of the integrin family of integral cell-surface proteins composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. A given chain may combine with multiple partners resulting in different integrins (1). Integrin beta-3 forms a Ca2+-dependent heterodimer complex with the GP IIb chain in platelets (2). The cytoplasmic domain of Integrin beta-3 has be suggested to have a key role in cell adhesion (3). Following activation integrin beta-3 brings about platelet/platelet interaction through binding of soluble fibrinogen. This step leads to rapid platelet aggregation which physically plugs ruptured endothelial surfaces (4).
