Function	Prolactin (PRL) is a peptide hormone secreted from the anterior pituitary gland, primarily associated with lactation. It plays an important role in the proliferation and differentiation of cells in mammary gland development (1, 2). It also participates in the regulation of angiogenesis (3). PRL has more actions than all other pituitary hormones combined. The initial step in the action of PRL, like all other hormones, is the binding to a specific membrane receptor, the PRL receptor (PRLR). Pituitary PRL acts via a classic endocrine pathway (2). The PRL that is produced by many different cell types can act in a more direct fashion; i.e., as a growth factor, neurotransmitter or immunomodulator, in an autocrine or paracrine manner. Thus, locally produced PRL can act on adjacent cells (paracrine) or on the PRL-secreting cell itself (autocrine) in many tissues via the broad distribution of its receptors (2, 4).
