|Homo sapiens inner centromere protein antigens 135/155kDa (INCENP), transcript variant 1|
|INCENP, or inner centromere protein, is a chromosomal passenger protein that is a component of the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC), which acts as a key regulator of mitosis (1, 2). The CPC complex has essential functions at the centromere in ensuring correct chromosome alignment and segregation, and it is required for chromatin-induced microtubule stabilization and spindle assembly (2). INCENP, Survivin, and Borealin are three components of the CPC complex that regulate the activity and localization of its enzymatic component, the kinase Aurora B (3). INCENP localizes on chromosome arms and inner centromeres from prophase through metaphase, subsequently transferring to the spindle midzone and midbody from anaphase through cytokinesis (2). During telophase, INCENP is located within the midbody in the intercellular bridge, where it is discarded after cytokinesis (1).|
