Interleukin 13 (IL-13) is a cytokine that is produced by T helper type 2 (Th2) cells, mast cells, and basophils (1). It is a major stimulator of inflammation and tissue remodeling at sites of Th2 inflammation (2). IL-13 shares several biological profiles with IL-14, including IgE production, CD23 and MHC Class II expression, inhibition of antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity with down regulation of IgG type I receptor, and suppression of type I interferon (3). Also, like IL-4, IL-13 has been genetically and functionally implicated in the pathogenesis of allergy and asthma (4).
