S100-A9 (MRP14) is a member of the S100 family proteins containing two EF-hand calcium-binding motifs (1). S100 proteins are localized in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of a wide range of cells, and involved in the regulation of a number of cellular processes such as cell cycle progression and differentiation (2). S100-A9 forms a heterodimer, Calprotectin, with S100-A8 in a calcium-dependent manner. Calprotectin is a major calcuim- and zinc-binding protein in the cytosol of neutrophils, monocytes, and keratinocytes (3). S100-A9 may function in the inhibition of casein kinase and altered expression of this protein is associated with the disease cystic fibrosis (2).
