HSPA2, a member of the HSP70 family of heat shock proteins, is a human counterpart of mouse and rat HspA2 protein (called previously Hsp70.2 in mouse and Hst70 in rat), which are specifically and highly expressed in spermatocytes. The expression of the human HSPA2 protein is not limited to the testis. Recent data show that human tumor cells can express this protein at significant levels. The characteristics of HSPA2 expression suggests that it can influence the phenotype and survival of cancer cells similarly as overexpression of major members of the HSP70 family (1).
