Macrophage inflammatory protein-1 beta (MIP-1 beta/CCL4) belongs to the intercrine beta (chemokine CC) family (1). MIP-1 beta functions to promote accumulation of lymphocyte, marcorphages, monocytes, and NK cells during various inflammatory conditions through its chemotactic properties. MIP-1 beta is an essential inhibitor of cell infection by human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). MIP-1 beta inhibits HIV-1 by blocking or down-regulating the receptors CCR5, one of coreceptor for HIV-1 entry (2). In human, MIP-1 beta exhibits specific attractant activities to CD4+ T lymphocytes, with minor activities to T cells from naive (CD45RA) phenotype (3).
