CD45, also known as the leukocyte common antigen (LCA), is a transmembrane protein-tyrosine phosphatase (PTPase) that is expressed in hematopoietic cells except ethrocytes and platelets (1). CD 45 has been implicated in activating, differentiating and the development of the immune system. It regulates T-or B-cell activation during receptor-specific recognition by dephosphorylating tyrosine residues in protein kinase substrates. It is also required for T- and B-cell activation by regulating Lck & Fyn and Lyn & Blk respectively (2). Additionally, the expression of the CD45 5 isoforms can be seen in the various stages of differentiation of normal hematopoietic cells depending on the activation status of the cell (3).
