|Homo sapiens pentraxin 3, long (PTX3)|
|The long pentraxin 3 PTX3 is a member of a complex superfamily of multifunctional proteins, produced by innate-immunity cells in response to proinflammatory signals and Toll-like receptor engagement (1). PTX3 is a prototypic soluble pattern recognition molecule (PRM), thus the recognition of a microbial component by PTX3 can amplify the inflammatory response. It plays a role in the regulation of complement-mediated immune responses (2). PTX3 seems to also have unique immunoregulatory functions such as modulating the phagocytic uptake of apoptotic cells by macrophages and dendritic cells (3). A mutation in PTX3 is associated with a severe defect in female fertility (1).|
