OVOL2 belongs to the Ovo family of evolutionarily conserved zinc finger transcription factors that act downstream of key developmental signaling pathways including Wg/Wnt and BMP/TGF-ß (1). OVOL2 functions as a DNA-binding protein that binds to the sequence 5'-G(G/C/T)GGGGG-3' (2). It is expressed in myriad embryonic and postnatal tissues, so it is essential for embryonic development (1, 3).
