Hsp73 is a normal cell constituent which is synthesized in increased abundance under adverse environmental circumstances, such as non-physiological temperatures or treatment with amino acid analogues (1). Data has shown a molecular mechanism for cytokine-mediated posttranscriptional regulation of Bim mRNA by Hsc70, which binds to AU-rich elements (AREs) in the 3'-untranslated region of specific mRNAs and enhances their stability. The RNA binding potential of Hsc70 is regulated by cochaperones including Bag-4 (also SODD), CHIP, Hip, and Hsp40 (2). Hsp73 protein expression was detected in the cytoplasm of melanoma cells in primary tumors and metastases. In primary melanomas, the proportion of Hsp73 protein expressing cells correlated with tumor thickness which was found to be statistically significant (3).
