Reference Data

Target NameHomo sapiens glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), transcript variant 1
Alternative NameFLJ42474; FLJ45472
Database LinkNP_002046
Entrez Gene 2670 Human
Entrez Gene 24387 Rat
FunctionGlial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) belongs to the class III of the intermediate filament (IF) proteins highly specific to astrocytes which function as nerve cells in the brain and in the central nervous system (CNS) (1-2). Two other class III IF proteins, nestin and vimentin, dominate in immature astrocytes, while GFAP is most abundant in mature astrocytes (3). GFAP is used as a marker to distinguish astrocytes form other glial cells during development. Mutations in GFAP cause Alexander disease, a rare disorder of the CNS. Most frequent mutations are located at Arginine 79 or 239 (4).
Related PathwayES Cell Differentiation/IPS

IHC Image
Immunohistochemistry (Frozen sections) - GFAP antibody [EP672Y]; TA300587 staining GFAP in a xenograft section, human neural stem cells in fetal mouse, by Immunohistochemistry (Frozen sections).Tissue was fixed in paraformaldehyde and permeabilized with 0.2% Triton X. Samples were then blocked using 3% normal donkey serum for 1.5 hours at 20°C, then incubated with TA300587 at a 1/1000 dilution for 1 hour at 20°C. The secondary used was a donkey anti-rabbit polyclonal conjugated to Alexa Fluor555, used at a 1/500 dilution..TA300587 only recognizes human astrocytes and none of the murine tissue was stained. The staining of the human GFAP fibers was always very strong, clear and reliable. Very good antibody for xenograft experiments in neuroscience!
