CD23, a type II transmembrane glycoprotein, is a key molecule for B-cell activation and growth and functions as a receptor for IgE. It plays essential roles in the regulation of IgE production and in the differentiation of B-cells. CD21 has been identified as a ligand for CD23 in the control of IgE production. It is expressed in many hematopoietic cell types (1). CD23 expression is upregulated in B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia and in some centroblastic/centrocytic lymphoma cases. CD23 is used in the differentiation of small lymphocytic lymphomas and mantle cell lymphoma (2).
