Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TDT) is a unique DNA polymerase that changes the addition of deoxynucleoside 5’-triphosphate to the 3’-end of a DNA initiator without template direction (1). TDT contributes to the generation of junctional diversity in antigen receptors of immature lymphocytes, and its expression serves as a developmental marker for the sites of teleost lymphopoiesis (2). TDT is also an oligoclonal marker characterizing several populations of undifferentiated or poorly differentiated blasts that tend to develop towards or along the lymphoid pathway. Together with specific immunological markers, this enzyme is useful to define the particular type of leukemic cells (3).
