CD9 belongs to the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as tetraspanin (TM4SF) family and is expressed in variety of hematopoietic and epithelial cells (1,2). It can form homodimers or homooligomers as well as heterooligomers with other members of the TM4SF family (3,4). It can trigger platelet activation and aggregation and modulate cell adhesion and migration. In addition, CD9 appears to promote muscle cell fusion and support. Downregualtion of CD9 has been reported to be associated with tumor progression and metastasis (5,6).
