|CD38, also called ADP-ribosyl cyclase, is an ectoenzyme that uses nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) as a substrate to generate second messengers (1, 2). In particular, it synthesizes cyclic ADP-ribose, a second messenger for glucose-induced insulin secretion (2). CD38 also has cADPr hydrolase activity (2). It is preferentially expressed at both early and late stages of B and T-cell maturation (2). CD38 regulates inflammatory responses by modulating the activity of the responding leukocytes and by altering the activity of non-hematopoietic cells in inflamed tissue (3). CD38 also functions in cell adhesion, signal transduction, and calcium signaling (4). It is expressed at high levels in the pancreas, liver, kidney, malignant lymphoma and neuroblastoma (2).|
