| Akt1/PKBa is a serine/threonine protein kinase whose kinase activity plays a key role in cellular functions such as apoptosis, glycogen synthesis, and cell growth. Moreover, it plays a role in glucose transport by mediating insulin-induced translocation of the GLUT4 glucose transporter to the cell surface (2). It promotes glycogen synthesis by mediating the insulin-induced activation of glycogen synthase. Akt1/PKBa is activated by various growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and insulin and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) (1, 2). Defects in Akt1 are associated with breast, colorectal, and ovarian cancer (2). |
