FunctionADH1A/1B/1C are class I alcohol dehydrogenases that consist of alpha, beta, gamma subunits, which are members of the alcohol dehydrogenase family. Members of this enzyme family metabolize a wide variety of substrates, including ethanol, retinol, other aliphatic alcohols, hydroxysteroids, and lipid peroxidation products. Class I alcohol dehydrogenases, consisting of several homo- and heterodimers of the three subunits, exhibit high activity for ethanol oxidation and play a major role in ethanol catabolism. The alpha, beta and gamma subunits are tandemly organized in a genomic segment as a gene cluster. ADH1A is monomorphic and predominant in fetal and infant livers, whereas ADH1B and ADH1C are polymorphic and strongly expressed in adult livers.
